What Are Cohesive Gel Breast Implants?
The main type of implant that is being used in the United States today are saline filled due to the fact that the FDA put a hold on the silicone implants in 1992 and just lifted this hold in 2006. They did not have sufficient evidence that the silicone was safe for women and it took 14 years for them to get this information so cohesive gel breast implants are being used again.
The cohesive gel breast implants are different from the regular silicone implants in just a very slight way. The silicone gel in these implants are firmer than the silicone in the regular implants. This allows the implant to keep its shape no matter what movement or position the breast is put into.
Inside the cohesive gel breast implants and all other breast implants, there are fillers. These fillers are what shapes the breast implant. The cohesive gel breast implants have many more fillers in them than the regular breast implants which make the implant have control of shape. The fillers in other breast implants have room to move around within the implant which can cause folds and ultimately cause the nightmares that are associated with breast implants leaking.
A big benefit of the cohesive gel breast implants are the form stable fillers that the gel plants are filled with. Without these fillers and the amount that there are of them, the implant would lose its shape over time and that is when women go into the doctors office for another procedure with new implants. The cohesive gel breast implants will not lose shape over time and will maintain the shape that they are put in. This also adds a benefit to the cohesive gel breast implants because the woman can discuss with her doctor the shape that she would like her breast in. Another benefit of the cohesive gel breast implants is due to the consistency of the gel, if the implant were to burst, the migration of the gel would be very little except for the microscopic gel traces that would migrate. There has not been very much research on this matter due to the fact that the cohesive gel breast implants have not had this problem except for one case out of several thousand implant surgeries. These cohesive gel breast implants have only been used for about the last 10 years over seas. They have not been approved by the FDA yet and are only used here in the United States for research purposes in order to get them approved. The cohesive gel breast implants, or sometimes called the "gummybear" implants, are being tested on women who are healthy and who can commit themselves to a 10 year on-going study. It will probably be awhile before they are available.
